2025 Emergency Drought Well Relief
Lease Program
For Drought Emergency Groundwater Well Authorization
The Selah-Moxee Irrigation District (SMID), in partnership with the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology), is offering for lease, drought mitigation water for the 2025 Emergency Drought Well Relief Program.
This mitigation water is offered on a first-come first-serve basis. The cost to purchase mitigation water from the SMID Water Bank is $350 per acre-foot.
In order to have your emergency drought well authorization approved by Ecology, you must submit your Application for Emergency Authorization to use Supplemental Water in the Yakima River Basin, along with proof of mitigation.
You may obtain your proof of mitigation from the SMID Water Bank by submitting to SMID a copy of your Application for Emergency Authorization to use Supplemental Water in the Yakima River Basin, the amount of water leased, completing the WATER RIGHT SHORT-TERM LEASE AGREEMENT, and submitting payment for the amount of water leased. Once the agreement has been signed and payment received, the District will issue an SMID Mitigation Certificate, which will be your proof of mitigation for Ecology’s approval. Once you have obtained Ecology’s final approval you may begin pumping from your emergency drought well.
