The Selah-Moxee Irrigation District (SMID), which was organized on March 5, 1917, is the successor of the Selah-Moxee Canal Company founded on November 18, 1899. The company contracted with G.S. Taylor to assume ownership of the ditch dug by Taylor in 1890 in the East Selah area. The Ditch was widened and extended to provide water into the Terrace Heights and Moxee areas around 1900.

The Moxee Company established in 1886 was the predecessor of the Moxee Irrigation District that operated and maintained both the Moxee Ditch and Hubbard Canal. In 1992 the Moxee Irrigation District merged with the Selah-Moxee Irrigation District increasing the District’s service area by over 2,000 acres.

SMID has been operating the Fowler Ditch since 2021, which belongs the Fowler Ditch Association (FDA). The Fowler Ditch was operated by the Union Gap Irrigation District (UGID) for many decades until the landslide on the Rattlesnake Ridge was noticed in October 2017. The landslide eventually destroyed the Union Gap Irrigation District pipeline in the area forcing UGID and FDA to go their separate ways.
