The Selah-Moxee Irrigation District (SMID), which was organized on March 5, 1917, is the successor of the Selah-Moxee Canal Company founded on November 18, 1899. The company contracted with G.S. Taylor to assume ownership of the ditch dug by Taylor in 1890 in the East Selah area. The Ditch was widened and extended to provide water into the Terrace Heights and Moxee areas around 1900.

The Moxee Company established in 1886 was the predecessor of the Moxee Irrigation District that operated and maintained both the Moxee Ditch and Hubbard Canal. In 1992 the Moxee Irrigation District merged with the Selah-Moxee Irrigation District increasing the District’s service area by over 2,000 acres.

In 2024, a merger was completed with the Selah-Moxee Irrigation District (SMID) and the Fowler Ditch Association (FDA). SMID had been operating the Fowler Ditch since 2021, after the Rattlesnake Ridge landslide destroyed the Union Gap Irrigation District’s pipeline. The merger of the Fowler Ditch lands increased SMID’s service area about 2,000 acres.
